Co-Option of New Councillor
Giorgio Buttironi was co-opted as a member of Horley Town Council following a vote at the Extraordinary Meeting held on 22 May 2018. Cllr Buttironi will represent the Horley North West Ward.
Giorgio arrived in the United Kingdom in 2007, at the age of eighteen, to study medieval history at the University of Winchester. During his studies, he became interested in both local and student union politics and was eventually elected international student officer in 2009. After graduating from Winchester, he went on to study international relations at Durham University until 2011 and, eventually, policy and government in the European Union at the London School of Economics until 2013. When, in 2015, he received an offer to work as public affairs officer for the National Federation of Builders, he decided to move to Horley in order to be closer to work and he has been living in Horley ever since.
Giorgio states "I want to be a town councillor because I am a strong believer of good policy in practice and I have seen personally how good policy can improve ordinary people's lives for the better. For me, it is about the cleanliness of our recreational parks, the state of our streets and the safety of our community. I have much passion about making a significant impact for my local community, although it is important to acknowledge that I will have much to learn from many of the officials on Horley Town Council who have served us for almost three decades. All I can say is that I will be honoured to work alongside them ..."
