Horley Conservation Group – Update Winter 2017/18
The Horley Conservation Group continues to have a programme of tasks designed to maintain and enhance some of the green spaces mainly around the North East sector of the town. As we look back on 2017 the voluntary group of helpers can be rightly proud of achievements that have included
- Riverside Garden Park - Scrub clearance, hedge-laying, invasive non-native plant removal from stream banks and surrounding areas, small shrub/tree thinning, litter clearance
- Tanyard Pond - Scrub clearance, habitat improvement work for aquatic invertebrates, willow coppicing, litter clearance from around and in the pond, tree planting, invasive non-native plant removal from surrounding woodland
- Tanyard Meadows - Litter clearance, invasive non-native plant removal from stream banks and surrounding areas
- Langshott Woods - Litter clearance, invasive non-native shrub removal from native woodland
- The Fieldings – Initiation of a small community orchard which has now been planted and will be monitored and nurtured by the group over the coming months and years.
- Church Meadow - Wildflower area maintenance, invasive non-native plant removal along river banks and litter clearance
- Emlyn Meadows - Scrub clearance around pond, invasive non-native plant removal along river banks and litter clearance
Other areas of local activity during 2017 have been
- Burstow Stream- Invasive, non-native plant removal
- Wheatfield Way balancing pond Willow coppicing, litter clearance
- Riverfly water quality monitoring at 2 points on the Burstow Stream, with more survey sites planned for 2018
