Horley WW1 Book of Remembrance
A biography of all 122 heroes listed on Horley's War Memorial have been compiled into a Horley WW1 Book of Remembrance which you are invited read in the Horley Library from Wednesday 30 July. This book marks 100 years since the outbreak of the Great War.
Following extensive research carried out by Doug Cox, all the men featured on the Horley War Memorial located at the junction of Brighton Road and Vicarage Lane have one page each dedicated in commemoration. As well as being displayed in this library, the contents of the book is also available for downloading, so please follow this link.
The Town Council, along with other organisations, believe there is an important sense of duty to remember the British and Commonwealth troops who lost their lives fighting in the Great War. The production of this book of dedication will augment the War Memorial, as a mark of respect to all fallen heroes who fought for our country. We trust it will help residents understand how Horley and its surrounding areas played its part in the Great War, and ensure that all memoirs of that sacrifice for British freedom and liberty are acknowledged for generations to come.
This book can be updated as we receive any additional material. Please pass on any information or photos on to Horley Town Council.
Please note that the Royal British Legion, Horley Branch have organised a WW1 Commemoration Parade and Drumhead Service on Sunday 3 August 2014. The Parade is due to leave at 2.00 pm from the RBL, Albert Road following which the service will start at 2.20 pm at in the Memorial Gardens, Brighton Road. Everyone is very welcome to participate.
