New Town Mayor for Horley

At the Annual Council Meeting held on Tuesday 15 May 2007, Horley Town Council elected Cllr Simon Marshall as new Town Mayor and Chairman of the Council. Cllr Richard Bethell has also been elected as Vice Chairman.

Cllr Simon Marshall, who has been Chairman of the Town Council’s Leisure & Amenities Committee since 2002, was naturally delighted and honoured at this news and said “it will be a privilege and an honour to be able to serve the Horley community in this way. My primary aim is to consolidate the excellent work of the previous administration so ably led by our former Town Mayor, Cllr Michael Miller. He will certainly be a hard act to follow, but I am determined that we shall continue to work as a close Community minded Council. Many members have been newly elected and I warmly welcome them to this Council. We shall certainly have some exciting projects to consider. I will also ensure that the Town Council’s view is strongly represented at other authorities. The Town Council will continue to support St Catherine’s Hospice and I have also nominated the Brambles Respite Care Centre as a second charity to support. I shall have a very able deputy in Cllr Richard Bethell, whom I am pleased to welcome aboard.”

As a result of the local elections held on 3 May, the Town Council has eighteen members to represent six wards and they will all serve until 2011. Eleven members have been newly elected and seven members were re-elected.

At last night’s meeting, which was the first one of the municipal year, all members made their Declarations of Acceptance of Office and were elected onto the main committees. Committee Chairmen will be elected later at their respective committee meetings.. All Councillors’ details and photos are available on the Town Council’s web site, as well as a schedule of all forthcoming Council meetings for the next municipal year. Details of the surgery rota, press releases, directories and a “what’s on” page are also available.

Further information is available from the Town Clerk, Alan Jones.
