Town Clerk receives Award

Horley Town Council is delighted to announce that its Town Clerk, Alan Jones, has been awarded the AQA Certificate in Local Council Administration. Alan is only the second clerk in Surrey to receive the award.

The AQA scheme was launched by the Government in 2003, in conjunction with the Quality Parish Council Scheme, and was developed by the National Training Strategy specifically for local councils. It is the first time that a professional qualification has been designed specifically for parish and town clerks. The qualification requires the clerk to possess the necessary knowledge, skills and competences in legal, financial and procedural matters.

The Town Council has been reviewing the criteria for Quality Parish Status. Now that Alan has received this award, the Council already fulfils most of the requirements, and will give serious consideration to the matter very shortly.

Chairman of the Town Council, Cllr Michael Miller stated on behalf of the members, the award was a significant achievement and it would ultimately be of benefit to the council and to all Horley residents. He was pleased that Alan had devoted so much of his time outside work to achieve this prestigious award, which helps to make Horley one of the leading town councils in Surrey.

Alan will be presented with his certificate at the Annual Town Meeting on 20 April 2004.
