M23 (J9) Safety Improvement Scheme

What is happening?

Starting on Monday 8 March, the Highways Agency will carry out work on the north and south bridge crash barriers of the Gatwick Interchange (M23 Junction 9). The works are expected to last approxiamtely four weeks.

What is involved and why is it necessary?

The works will involve the removal of existing crash barriers and the installation of upgraded ones. Designed to the lastest standards the barriers provide improved safety for road users as they better absorb impact and reduce deflection.

How do the schemes affect me?

For the duration of the crash barrier upgradiing works, the Highways Agency will use a range of traffic management systems to reduce the effect of its road works on the area. During peak times (5.00 am to 10.00 pm) both lanes will be narrowed to enable traffic flow to be maintained. During off-peak times (10.00 pm to 5.00 am), when the works will be carried out, the bridge will be closed and a fully signed diversion route will be in operation.

Where will the diversion route be?

For traffic entering and exiting Gatwick, a comprehensively signed diversion route will be in place.

Traffic travelling southbound on the M23 wishing to use the slip road on J9 will be divereted along to exit at J10 and back to rejoin the M23 northbound carriageway. It will then be diverted off at J9 into Gatwick. Menawhile, traffic travelling northbound on the M23 will be unaffected during the works and still be able to leave the M23 at J9.

Traffic exiting Gatwick and wishing to travel soutbbound will be diverted via the A217, A23 and A2011 to join the M23 at J10. Traffic exiting Gatwick and travelling northbound will be unaffected and still be able to join the M23 at J9.

What precuations should I take?

It is recommended that road users allow extra time for journeys into and out of Gatwick Airport.
