Celebration of Village Green Status

Horley residents living on the Landen Park Estate in Meath Green will be celebrating the official designation of their village green at an event on Saturday 5 October.  This fun event will run between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm on the Village Green which is located between Landen Park and Arne Grove.  During the event adults and children will be sowing wildflower seeds on the northern side of the green.  There will be something for everyone with activities and games for children, various stalls, raffle, cake sale and refreshments.

The event is being organised by the newly formed Landen Park Estate Residents’ Association, which was set up by residents earlier this year following Surrey County Council’s official designation of the land as a village green.  The aim of the Landen Park Estate Residents’ Association is to take care of the green for the long-term, maintaining a safe recreational space for the community to use and enjoy.

Newly elected chair of the Residents’ Association, Martin Tasker, said:

“Residents have worked really hard to achieve ‘village green’ status in order to protect this area for existing residents and generations to come, and this event is an opportunity for us to celebrate as a community.”

Residents are also keen to sustain and create areas of the green for wildlife, which is the reason for sowing a wildflower patch.  They are being supported in this endeavour by The Gatwick Greenspace Partnership.  Kevin Lerwill, Gatwick Greenspace Partnership Officer said:

“We are pleased to support the residents of Landen Park Village Green in their work to convert a space into a more wildlife friendly and attractive space that residents can still use for informal recreation. Local volunteers will be removing a small patch of the turf before the seeds are sown and with a bit of rain and a bit of weeding periodically afterwards, there should be a nice display of flowers next Summer, which will not only look good, but will hopefully attract lots of pollinating insects as well”.
